Neck pain is the second most common reason that people come and see me at my clinic. Low back pain is the first.
Neck pain can be the result of trauma like a car accident where there is whiplash of the head and neck. It can be from a fall or hit to the head in the case of a concussion. Other causes of neck pain include repetitive strain injuries and poor posture.
Increasingly “text neck” is becoming an issue, and as time goes on, I anticipate more people will have neck pain from looking down at their phone for hours.
Some of my patients strictly have neck pain, others have neck pain complicated by other symptoms. The neck is a critical area to the rest of the body because of it’s proximity to the skull and brain. The neck also protects and carries signals via the spinal cord to other tissues and organs in the body include distal places like the tips of the toes and fingers.
I have seen conditions where a patient’s neck is totally locked up, twisted and unable to move like in Wry Neck or Torticollis. Sometimes the patient has slept wrong and their neck is kinked as a result. Other times I find there is a deeper underlying cause to the neck pain and symptoms.
When the nerve and blood circulation is affected in the neck between the heart and brain patients can get headaches. Tension headaches are the most common headache which are more related to stress, alignment and muscle tension. Next most common are migraine headaches which have a neurologic and vascular connection as well.
